Folder with question mark startup.. cable or software problem?
Hello,
so I have the blinking folder with question mark screen upon start up on my MacBook Pro 2010 like I’ve read many others have had before as well.
when I try to turn it on while holding the options key, only a mouse appears, nothing else.
I have read the hard drive cable has been an issue with many MacBook Pro 2010 models. When I took it to a shop today, I was told immediately it was a software problem once they saw the start up “? Folder” screen. When I asked if they could check the cable first to see if maybe that is causing it, they said no it’s not the cable it’s a software problem.
i am living in a foreign country and this is all translated through a friend who speaks English perfectly. the only option they gave me was to leave it with them to wipe it clean and try to install new software - but I said no thank you for now (I wanted to do some more research first & because I have documents/pictures on there not backed up)
Now I’m sure they know more than me and it could honestly be a software problem, but my question is.. can you be 100% certain without even looking at the hard drive cable inside the laptop?
Ist dies eine gute Frage?

Here's a good reference: If your Mac doesn't start up all the way
While Apples T/N here If your Mac starts up to a question mark does state one of the first actions is to re-install the OS. Which is likely what the shop was leaning on for guidance. Without taking the time to dig a bit more.
