White screen at boot

Every now and then, i get a white screen, that seems to cover up the users login page. This occurs just before the Apple logo and the Chime sound. Normally when this occurs, thinking that its a freeze, i do a restart by using the power button. But today i acted as if there was no white screen and i pressed the buttons as if i was logging in to my user and it worked. This white screen seemed as if it was a cover up.

What could be wrong? Is there anything i can do about it? Any suggestions?

Update (08/24/2020)

I noticed that i can log in despite the whitish screen i see at boot. I have 2 users, one is a guest and the other is admin. Entering the admin user without seeing is not so easy, but entering the guest can be done with closed eyes since i can enter it simply by pressing enter on the withish screen. Apparently logging in works even if i cant see the screen.

So i enter the guest and then i log out and enter the admin and it all works fine. Isnt that strange? Maybe just maybe might this be something else?

Is there a way (an applications perhaps) that i could know at what state of functionality the graphics card is?

Your system originally came with either a ATI (AMD) Radeon HD 5670 or Radeon HD 5750 graphics MXM board.

To find out go to About This Mac > System Report click on Graphics/Displays section you should see two graphic services the built-in Intel and the MXM board.

Dan, i was thinking... if it was a failing GPUboard, should i have graphic issues in other cases as im working? Why does this happen only at boot, and why if i reboot it works fine? Are there any answers to these questions? Just wondering :-)

Thats the difference between Failing and Failed ;-}

I guess in my mind... "failing" is continuous procedure of partial failure until it reaches the "failed point" of no return.

What i want to ask, which is important is... How can i see my files if the board reaches to the point of no return and the iMac although it boots i cannot see the contents. Is there a way i can see my desktop and manage my files for a short period of time until i migrate them to a diff computer?
