Any news regarding the missing brightness slider?

von

@Dave Menkehorst - By chance did you disable the discreet GPU as it had failed?

This sounds like you have a messed up keyboard. Did you have a liquid spill at some point?

Just in case you don’t know here’s the user guide info on the Fn keys:

When you use the brightness control buttons you should see a icon on your screen which visually shows you the level.

Update (08/04/2020)

@mercutio999 - Its not! The control via the Fn keys maybe they aren’t working.

Lets backup here... You are seeing the controls them selves both on the Screen and Prefs for setting? So its not seeing the control its the fact the screen is not altering, then the backlight logic has a problem!

Your Displays control panel also has a slider which you can use to adjust the screen brightness. Do you even see the control?

Thank you, but why would the brightness controls be missing from High Sierra?

von

Its not! This is from my 15" MacBook running High Sierra

von

You need to replace the display assembly to the correct unit.

Lets see if the onboard diagnostics gives you an error. Restart your system and press the D key. Let us know if you got an error code.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

@Dan, the onboard diagnostic is good.

@Dan did yopu resolve this issue? my macbook pro sam issue dont have an option to adjust brighgness in display settings and my brighness slider does nothing

von

@Reino PianoMan - Sorry for not seeing your post sooner. The issue is the wrong display assembly. The display ID is not recognized by the OS so it won’t offer the controls.

Bottomline go back to the seller to get the correct display assembly.

I have the exact same issue. I have no issue with any other keys on my keyboard, and I’ve never spilled anything on it. Here are what I’ve looked at so far:

-F1 and F2 keys do not work: System Pref > Keyboard > “Use F1, F2, etc as standard function keys..” BOX CHECKED

-No Brightness scale bar in Displays > Display/Color/Night Shift

I have the same issue, it's nothing to do with the correct display assembly in my case, the brightness slider went and buttons stopped functioning after updating a 2011MBP to High Sierra. I updated to Big Sur using a patch and the problem still persists

Did you buy this system new or used?

Not sure why you thought going to an unsupported OS would address this, the highest Apple supported version for the 2011 systems is Mojave and for the 2012 Catalina.

Apple does not test or support Big Sur with these older systems. So while it can be installed and does work quite well trying to diagnose a problem requires sticking with the Apple supported versions of OS.

What I can tell you my 2012 15” MacBook Pro had no problems with High Sierra and still works with Catalina. To be clear this was a 2011 system which I replaced the logic board with a 2012 board.

In any case Apple no longer services our systems and won’t offer any help either.

So what happened with your system during the upgrade then becomes the root issue. I would create an external drive running Sierra the boot up under it. Did that fix things?
