MacOS Recovery problem , can't install OS

Hello guys,

I'm Gabriele from Italy and I got problems with SSD installation on my father's old iMac 7.1.

I hope that here I'll find a solution :) For the "physical" part of the install I had no problems, I've installed a Crucial BX500. Then i plugged power, mouse and keyboard only.

Power up Mac and i've held command + R Mac OS Recovery didn't appear (only a folder with ? point on it).

Tried other times, then I searched other solutions on the internet: I've made a bootable EL CAPTAIN USB, power up and i've held option/alt button but only grey screen and appeared arrow cursor and the system seems to not recognize anything. No disks appeared, I've tried with TimeMachine backup too. I tried with factory CD, I've held C button but nothing. iMac has exprelled the disk and appeared another time the folder with ? on it. I've reset NVRAM too.

Sorry for my bad english, I hope you can understand all. Thanks!

I've 4GB of RAM and the SSD is a Crucial BX500

Ciao Gabriele,

Purtroppo, stai riscontrando alcuni problemi diversi.

Hi Gabriele,

Sadly, you are hitting a few different issues.

The Crucial BX500 drive is too fast for your system. This series needs a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive or a drive which can match the systems I/O speed. As an example: Samsung 860 EV0 Note the interface line clearly states “SATA 6 Gbps Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gbps & 1.5 Gbps interfaces”

So you’ll need to find an older fixed speed SATA II drive or go for one that auto sets to the systems I/O speed.

OK, that’s the drive issue, now we need to talk about what OS you need and how to install it.

This series does not offer internet recovery as the firmware does not have the feature, you would need a 2011 system which is the first that offered it after its firmware was upgraded. Here we need an external FireWire bootable OS installer drive or the grey CD/DVD OS installer disks that came with the system or the retail copy of the OS.
