Can't install 16GB of ram

I have a 2010 MacBook A1342 I thought i should upgrade with an SSD and RAM. I read on a different thread that the maximum RAM the 2010 MacBook could take is 16GB.

So I ordered 2 sticks of 8GB DDR3 1066MHz PC3-8500 RAM and installed it, but it didn’t work at first. All i got was a 1 beep, which, after searching online, found out meant that no RAM was detected. I then saw that the thread said that it could support 16GB of RAM with the latest firmware, so i thought I should update the OS first (it was a very old version of OS X),

But even after updating to High Sierra and applying all the extra updates afterwards (which brought my ROM version to 68.0.0.0.0) it still wouldn’t take the RAM. I tried using just 1 stick of 8gb, but that didn’t work either.

I had two 2GB sticks laying around, which the system did take… I’m not sure what to do anymore.

@ungeneer - Go into About This Mac tell us the system info and what the processor is (specs) your system has.

Hopefully the following will help:

  1. Make sure the RAM sticks are seated properly.
  2. ✅ You have Lion 10.7.5 or later already installed
  3. Double check you have the latest EFI update which is version 2.1. If you don’t download it here:

  5. After all the above ask for an exchange or refund for your RAM. Buy RAM from iFixit store or OWC and try again. You could just have gotten bad sticks. I know you only got one beep so it’s unlikely but not impossible. It actually happens more often than you would think.

i am also getting same problem, my mac book works only in combination of 4(new buy) + 1(original one) 5GB ram works.. but when i run with 2x4gb it beeping sound and not booting up..
