That part is in fact the EMI foam. It is normally adhered to the hard drive in order to minimise vibrations.

Are you sure your iMac is the 2012 model?
I remember this as being part of the Intel iMac 27" EMC 2309 und 2374 Festplatte wechseln jump down to Set 15.
