How do I open the back pad on the bottom?

So I have a IdeaPad (series S340) to be exact a IdeaPad S340-15IWLTouch and I need to clean the fan, so I need to know how to open the back. I want to know what screw bit I need I have tried a T6 and a T5, because it has a star pattern on my like the screws. Any ideas?

Hi @randomuser2

Here’s the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop, taken from this webpage.

Go to p.44 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the fan. This starts by removing the back cover on p.33.

Note: Be sure remove the battery pack. disconnect it or remove it as soon as it is accessible to prevent any electrical problems when working inside a laptop e.g. accidentally slipping when using tools etc There is always power available on a motherboard even when the laptop is turned off. The power button is not a power isolating button. It merely signals the BIOS as to what the user wants to do. Think of the laptop as being in an extremely low power state when it is off rather than being totally isolated from the power supply. Reconnect the battery as late as possible in the reassembly process after the repair has been completed.

Unfortunately the manual doesn’t specify the screwhead size or type, only the dimensions of the screw. Note that there are 2 different sized screws holding the back cover 4 x 8mm and 6 x 4.5mm, M2 screws.

Even the parts list doesn’t show the screwhead type only the part number (5S10S35098) if you want all the screws for the laptop

You may just have to try using a screwdriver that works best.

not sure what its called but it has 6 points and it is not the smallest size of it, as I have a drill bit that is 6 points but smaller, and the 2nd smallest one worked for me. However, the more important things to know, at least for my model 81N8 or 818N, is that one of the screws towards the spacebar side is shorter and it has a washer inserted inside the lid. This makes the screw stay inside after infinite amounts of rotating it loose. I yanked it out essentially, but what helped was to fit my fingernail underneath the head of the screw as to act like a washer on the outside, and then a firm pull while you do so will get it out.

Also important to note is that all the screws have the blue Loctite on them. Taking out the screws were slightly challenging but doable. However, putting the screws back in ended up with my stripping half of them—generally more friction and some of the Loctite got loose and made the screw stop early or fasten early. Not knowing that that was happening, I over tightened the screw while a third of it was still outside.

I only screwed back on the middle screw and am hoping the clips do their job for the remainder of the life of this laptop. I was panicking when I couldn’t unscrew the screws after they stripped >50%.

I was replacing the fan and upgrading the ram. The screws for the fan also had the blue Loctite, so I am assuming all screws on the %#*@ laptop have the blue Loctite. I figure this is useful information to those who know what to do with it. have fun disassembling your laptops because I sure as !&&* didn’t.
