Issue with Dell XPS replacement battery

I just purchased a replacement battery for a DELL XPS 13 9360.

With the previous battery, the laptop would die as soon as the power cord was unplugged and it always had a yellow flashing light.

Dell BIOS system tests indicated a bad battery.

With the battery replacement, the indicator light no longer flashes yellow continuously and the BIOS tests pass. The battery will not charge past 46% and the laptop still dies immediately if power cord is unplugged.

Hi @siliconpaladin ,

Couple of things to try just to eliminate them.

Check the output voltage from the charger to make sure that it is 19.5V DC

Create a Win10 battery report to check the status of the battery

Hi @jayeff

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Holidays and several things got in the way.

Confirmed the charger is 19.5V DC (it's the original charger purchased with the laptop from Dell).

Battery report can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GMZcnBB...

@siliconpaladin

According to the battery report the design capacity of the battery is 59994 mWH (59.994Watt Hours)and the full charge capacity is 60002mWH (60.002 Watt Hours) so essentially the battery is fully charged but the system says that it isn't and also it should be able to handle the load without the laptop shutting down.

It could still be a faulty battery even though it shows fully charged it actually isn't and fails when on load

Check that the latest Dell Power management Service drivers ver.3.7.0 A00 are installed. Select Category > Systems Management to find them

@jayeff

Dell drivers installed. It reports excellent battery health but says it's only charged to 35% (which Windows agrees with).

Unplugging the laptop still immediately kills the power.

@siliconpaladin

You may have to install another battery (have you still got the old one?) to prove the problem either in the battery or in the laptop as the software monitoring the battery is at odds with how the battery is behaving i.e. can't power the laptop

Hi @siliconpaladin

I know that you said that you're using the original charger but have you got access to a compatible charger at all that you can try?

The only other thing that I can suggest is to do a full power refresh in case there is a corrupted BIOS.

Turn off the laptop and disconnect the charger.

Disconnect the main battery.

Disconnect the coin cell RTC battery from the motherboard Here's the service manual go to p.35 to view the procedure.

Press and hold the power button for a full 20 seconds and then release.

Reconnect the RTC battery

Reconnect the main battery

Reconnect the charger and switch on and check

Hi,

The Problem is The laptop battery is not the original battery and the replacement battery should have the same specifications’ as the the Manufacturer that’s what the machine is designed for . if the problem persists i recommend contacting Dell as its a new machine not long released so you may be covered by the warranty and recommend running their diagnostics tool.
