USB not working after power outage

My motherboard Asus Prime B250 Pro has not working USB ports of a primary controller (backward, front, additional USB pins). It has two USB 3.1 ports on backward which still work (separate controller).

It happened already multiple times, after a sudden power failure (sometimes Sunday evening our apartment building has power outages, long story, I hope it will be solved). I did try to restart my PC, clean it, reinstall drivers, clear CMOS, many other things and nothing helped. But after a few days, sometimes a week they start working again. Also when USBs are not working the PC can not go to sleep or be turned off, it continues to work with a black screen (at least coolers).

So, my assumption is some current loop which prevents USB from working and turning off. Any idea what I can test with a multimeter or something like that? How to do that?

Hi @neoer

When the USB ports are not working, if you are using a PS/2 mouse (you didn't say) then try plugging in a USB mouse just to see if the laser light turns on, indicating that there is power available or not on the port. (or mobile phone - shows charging but not connecting, etc, anything that gives an indication of power being supplied by the USB port)

This is just to find out if it is a controller problem or a power problem to the USB ports.

If there is no power at the USB port, check in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click USB Root Hub (check all of them) > Properties > Power Management and check that the checkbox that says "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is UN checked > OK.

What happens if you hold the Power on button on for >5 seconds, does this turn the computer off?

Have you tried altering the sleep settings in Advanced Power options to see if that changes anything as saying "I did try ..... many other things and nothing helped" doesn't tell us whether you did or not?

Have you checked in Event Viewer for any noticeable Critical, Error or Warning events that may be relevant to the problem?

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it.

Yes, I tried to connect a USB led lamp and it is working on all USB ports. So there is power in USB connectors even when they are not recognized by PC.

> What happens if you hold the Power on button on for >5 seconds, does this turn the computer off?

Yes, this is what I usually do after turning it off.

All settings related to power management by PC are already changed, also tried live USB with Linux and the USBs are not working there as well.

Regarding events:

- In Critical errors, there are only Kernel-Power errors when the PC is turned off by power outage.

- In Error level errors, there are USB-USBXHCI errors: "Windows failed to start the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller for the following reason:

Controller reset timed out. Check with your computer manufacturer for an updated firmware for the controller."

@neoer

Does Device Manager show the same problem with the controller?

If it is the controller itself try searching online for the motherboard schematics as it should help with the circuit and components identification etc.

I found this website but you have to pay to download the schematic.

Device manager says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}

The requested operation was unsuccessful.

In Events, there are "Device not started" events with the following content:

Device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A2AF&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_00\3&11583659&0&A0 had a problem starting.

I think you have done all you can do. Are you insured?

My guess is that, as you are asking the question, you are not experienced in micro soldering.

Either take it to a qualified service technician or replace the motherboard.

Should be able to get one quite cheaply second hand.

And finally buy a good quality surge protector.

Depends on what I should replace, something I can do.

> Should be able to get one quite cheaply second hand.

I already bought one on eBay, and it is not working at all, now trying to refund/return it to a seller. The seller's PC was not working, but she said that issues were in her RAM and motherboard should fully function, by the fact it doesn't boot, beep, or any symptoms of life using all other components from my PC. So, net really good experience.

I know, but before this autumn, we didn't have any power outages for more than 5 years.

@neoer

eBay is always risky. Nothing local?
