BENQ G2222HDL display blinks off, bad caps? Cant open case :(

Hi All, first post (please be kind)

As per the title, really, victim is an oldish BenQ monitor, 22” LED backlit monitor, recently started going to a blank screen - the digital /analog input are working fine as the image flashes up for a second, then the screen blanks. I’m wondering if there’s some dodgy caps in the backlight driver circuit that’s causing this but I can’t get into the %#*@ thing to find out.

The case is hard plastic, typical seam all around the perimeter but no visible fixings, screws, tags or tabs beyond 2 small slots underneath which appear to do nothing, apart from crack the plastic when too much force is used.

Any suggestions from the collective as to a) is my theory correct and b) how to open up the case?

Here are some videos that will help you to open the monitor.

The first is for your model and the second is for a slightly later model but it looks similar as to how to open it.

To avoid cosmetic damage to the monitor by using a screwdriver as in the video, perhaps using the ifixit Prying and Opening Tool Assortment kit may make it easier.

Thanks for this, I did have some car trim tools that helped me gain access without too much cosmetic damage, however the front bezel is quite brittle plastic, and also carries the retaining loops, some of which suffered during opening, which has compromised the security of the fit slightly.

This is a bit irritating as the VESA mounting screw inserts are carried by the case rather than the metal frame inside, which means a loose case will affect the faith I have in the vesa mounting. We'll see how it feels when it's back together..

So after viewing the videos and my own explorations, there’s a few differences between my model and the ones shown, I suspect regional as the power board and it’s attached daughterboard is much larger in the videos:

There’s one electrolytic capacitor on the power board with a subtle bulge:

so I think to save me having to strip it all down again, I’ll replace the lot - there’s only 7 or so in total. The board itself looks quite easy to work on, nice component spacing and not a lot of surfacemount stuff to complicate things
