Camera will not charge the flash

I had a friend who I recently convinced into get a sun 600 LMS. I have had two and they are fun to shoot on. However after putting new film into it, the camera will remove the film shield like it is supposed to, and then it will not charge the flash. There is no flash indicator on this particular model (like another model of Sun 600 LMS I have) and it does not make the whining noise the other cameras do. It will however whine when I hold down the flash and shutter button, but it will not take a photo. It will take a photo using just the shutter button and not the flash as well. Any Ideas on what is wrong with it?
