Why doesn't my laptop charge, when it is turned on?

When I plug the charger to the laptop, it doesn’t charge, while it is turned on.

Though it does charge when, the laptop is turned off (I know this from the LED indicator on the computer).

I thought the problem might have been from the charger cable because there was a little plastic piece that had snaped off. This might have caused a bridging between plus and minus.

I then changed the cable on the charger by soldering on a new one. This didn’t help.

I borrowed a multimeter from a friend to check if the port in the laptop was getting the right voltage, which it does.

It might be important to ad that before I changed the cable on the charger. I was sometimes able to charge it while turned on, if I moved the cable a bit. Though this was quite a while ago, because I haven’t the laptop for a long time.

Is there anything else I can do to maybe fix it?

Hi,

Create a Win 10 battery report to check the status of the battery.

Compare the Design Capacity to the Full Charge Capacity values in the report.

If there is a big difference it may be that the battery is failing and the charger cannot do both, i.e. run the laptop and charge the battery at the same time.

Hi @Rasmus Lorenzen

The battery is only at 72% effectiveness when fully charged but I would have thought that even at this value it should be able to start the laptop without the charger connected, unless it is faulty and cannot handle the load.

Since you have changed the charger cable and measured the voltage at the input to the laptop the only way to tell now is to replace the battery as then you will know that you are using a known good battery.

Here's the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.36-37 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the battery pack.

On p.91 Item #14 you will find the part number for the battery.

Search online using only the part number appropriate to your particular model variant to find suppliers of the part.

Hello,

Thank you for the help!

I would guess this to be a big difference:

Design capacity: 54,760mWh

Full charge capacity: 39,460 mWh

Does this mean I would need to change the battery for the computer to work?

Hello again :)

I am able to start the laptop without the charger connected. It just won't charge while turned on.

I will change the battery and hope this will fix it.

Thanks again for your help!

Hello!

I finally got a new battery for the laptop! Unfortunately, this did not fix my problem.

Do you know if there's anything else I can try?

von

@Rasmus Lorenzen

Are you using the original charger i.e. 20V DC 6.75A 135W?

Can you borrow a compatible charger and check if it charges when the laptop is working?

Just wondering if the charger is the problem and it cannot supply the load (laptop operating) and charge the battery at the same time but it can charge when the laptop is off.

von

I am still using the original charger, though I have changed the cable as explained earlier.

I, unfortunately, don't know anyone I can borrow from.

Will have to buy one, if were to test this.

Did you uninstall the battery and reinstall it in Device manager with the latest drivers after you changed it?

Make sure you are downloading them from the lenovo website. 64 bit for 64 bit os 32 for 32. Oh you need to do 3 of them on lenovos. The ACPI one, the one for Energy and Flight Mode, and the Intel Chipset. You can take the battery out, unplug it and hit the power button 10 times then hold it down for 30 seconds. Then reinstall the battery for a power reset. Also if it's loose when plugged in take it apart and there should be a white molex connector. Those burn up sometimes on a couple of pins. Grab a new one online . They are $7 and easy to fix. Lenovos eat power. They usually use close to a 180 watt 8 amp power supply. If you are using one say around 3-4amps and 65 watts that is too small and could cause that issue. You can also try booting into the bios and see if it's charging there.

Honestly tho 80% of the time I see a broken Jack. I'm betting yours is no different. Cable's loose, unplug it, take out the battery, take out the bottom screws, pry the Jack out and see the broken piece of plastic sitting under it. That messes with the pin alignment. Luckily you can just unplug it and plug a new one in. They have ones you can re reuse the wire and solder on just check for burnt connections. Hope that helps
