Any NES repair veterens out there?

So, I do all sorts of electronics repair, but I seem to have the worst luck with NES's. Having fixed several of them and ordered quite a few replacement 72 pin connectors, I've found that I have a problem with nearly 50% of the connectors I get. I'll get a connector, it looks new, but it will only work intermittently or not at all. Then I'll try another new connector in the same NES and it works fine. I have a hard time believing these have such a high defect rate, but I can't imagine what I would be doing to cause it.

Basically what I'm asking is if there is any trick to replacing the 72 pin connector, and if anyone else has had a problem with a large number of defective connectors on the market being sold as new.
