The rear camera/led failed on my iPhone 4. I replaced it using the ifixit guide (very easy to do) but the new camera won't focus on near field objects. Any ideas...? should I try another camera or is there another fix. I tried the tapping and focusing trick multiple times with no luck

Hello,
We see this problem a lot, here is some possible solutions:
1) Do a new restore on the phone and set it up as a new device. Just like the common proximity sensor problem when replacing a screen, often you have problems with cameras as well. The phone calibrates all the sensors and cameras during the initial setup. Insure that you DO NOT restore from a backup at any point.
2) The camera you bought is likely a knockoff of the real thing. I would try with a new camera from a new supplier.
3) There is small resistors around the camera connector spot, on the mainboard. Take a quick look and unsure none of these have been knocked off during the disconnection of the camera. Take a picture of that area and let us see.

xs, thanks for your advice.. much appreciated. I think I had a cheap chinese knock-off (two actually). Bought the higher $ one from ifixit and it works perfectly. cheap knock-offs work well in some circumstances but not this one. thanks!
I have done all of this and bought the camera from the sight. Still no auto focus. In fact when I restored my phone, Itunes somehow created 3 backups which deleted my old backup so I lost all my photographs and contacts. Any suggestions for the camera? I know the backup wont work even though I undeleted the files. Apple has made it's software very user unfriendly.

I am really at a loss here. I have tried everything, even the camera focus flick trick on both cameras.

have you tried repositioning the camera? it may not be flush in it's housing. if that doesn't work I'd return it.
I have tried everything. I highly doubt its hardware if two cameras are doing the same thing. I bought the new camera off this site.
