iMac 2014 Fan 3000+ RPM on startup

My fan runs at over 3000 rpm on after a cold startup. It is currently running at 3200 RPM with very normal temperatures. CPU 85 C & GPU 67 C

  • I have reset the SMC, it doesn’t help
  • I have run diagnostic mode, no errors.
  • Have even reduced all my processes and removed chrome.

This is a standard Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). Never been opened or updated. I doesn’t sit in the sun and is in a cool place.

I have no idea what is, is it the actual fan? Is a just clogged up? Is the fan sensor bad? Thermal Paste?

Want to repair, but don’t know what the problem is.

Install this app TG Pro You'll want the full version as you'll want the logging function.

Let it run a few days post a snapshot of the main window making sure you size the window so all of the sensors are visible or take a second snapshot of the lower section after sliding the slider down. Post it and the log file here for us to see Bilder zu einer vorhandenen Frage hinzufügen

Hey, Steve!

I own this computer and noticed a few months back that the fans were running an abnormal amount even when the computer was at idle. My first thought was that there must be dust blocking some of the air vents thus preventing proper cooling.

There is a big vent behind the iMac’s stand but I found that that there was almost no dust present. I cleaned it out anyway and it made no difference with the fans.

It was a couple weeks later that I found out that there is a thin strip of 13 air vents at the very bottom of the display. These vents are responsible for the air intake and cooling where as the vent on the back is for air out.

The vents on the bottom of my machine were packed with dust and once I cleaned them out with an anti- static brush (or a trusty old toothbrush) my Mac’s fans returned to their normal RPM!

Give this a try and let me know if it works!

Good Luck!
