Internal mic not working properly since upgrade of NVME SSD

When I upgraded my iMac with an SSD, I managed to cover up the mic input with the adhesive tape kit I bought from Amazon. Mac had moved the mic on the Mid 2017 model!

I re-opened the iMac and took out all the internals, and replaced the NVME drive while I was at it. I pulled the tape off the microphone and reassembled. I had a lot of trouble reattaching the microphone cable, but eventually got there by use of a magnifying glass. I’m not 100% confident that it was a perfect fit, but upon reassembly The microphone seems to work, BUT not to full efficiency. It sounds like I’m in the bathroom. What could be wrong?

1) It seems sensible that if I did not put the ribbon back correctly there would be no sound at all, not inefficient sound. Could it be that I did not clear up the gunk from the mike slot?

2) With FaceTime, the sound simply isn’t great. But Zoom tends to reduce its recording level right in front of me! Zoom has a setting which automatically reduces the volume almost down to 0 while I’m talking! I have now turned it off and this seems to work to a degree, but the sound is still appalling. I cannot get any sound when trying to share my screen. Feels like a software issue… Is there a setting that I need to reset. SMC? PRAM?

3) Do I replace the mic. Could I have dislodged or broken it when I took the motherboard out? (I don’t think I did)

Thank you!

This is a common issue! Review this guide iMac 27" 2017 Klebestreifen tauschen Steps 4 & 15.

Some kits don’t have the needed punch in the adhesive strip so as not to block the microphone hole.

Hi Dan... Thanks for your answer but I’ve already seen that post which is how I realised I made my original mistake. The problem is deeper. The mic is uncovered, but seems not to be working as well as it should be.

Could you re-read my original post and let me know what you think?

ITs the same problem! You are blocking the transmission of sound to the mic. Etierh the hole is clogged or when you put the mic back on you covered the hole within the ribbon cable as the microphone diaphragm is inward to the cable not outward.

Hi Dan... I never detached the mic - knowingly... and did not apply tape to any part of the ribbon. I DID have trouble inserting the ribbon back into its tiny socket on the MB and wondered if that might have something to do with the lower quality.

My concern is that 1) The quality of the mike is not the same as before and 2) Zoom seems to automatically lower the mic volume which it didn’t do before. 3) when sharing my screen in Zoom, the mic stops working entirely. So I’m wondering if this is actually a software problem which could be fixed by resetting the SMC or the P RAM.
