micro USB charging con Change?- Alcatel onetouch pixi 3 OT8079 tab

Hi, I need to change the micro USB charging connector on a Alcatel onetouch pixi 3 OT 8079 tablet.

Problem I’m having is I cant find a retailer that has it in stock. Can someone recommend a supplier that I will be able to purchase one from? I cant seem to find it anywhere. I would order it from digikey but am not 100% sure of the exact specs as ZXW does not have schematics for Alcatel. I cant even find info on which models use the same micro USB connector which are compatible with the OT8079.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,

I don’t know but the main differences between USB connectors is how they’re mounted on the board, i.e. through hole type or smd type, 90° or straight etc and also importantly where and how many mounting lugs are situated on the body of the connector so that they line up with the mounting pads or holes etc on the motherboard. The lugs ensure that it is securely held to the board and they take the mechanical strain and not the connecting power and data pins.

The USB power/data pinout is standard so that’s not a worry.

Here’s a link for a USB connector for an OT 8080 which at least shows what type it is (straight smd) and where the mounting lugs are situated. I linked this one because searching for your model parts indicated that this model shared the same screen part as yours so maybe it also has the same USB connector. Perhaps you could compare this to what is in your model.

Here’s a video showing how to replace the screen in your model, which may help. It shows how to open the tablet and remove the motherboard so that access is possible. The USB connector position can be seen but not the connector so well. Maybe it is on the underside of the board

Hi Jay,

Thank you very much for the info, it has helped me a lot.

I could find any info on the net explaining the differences between plugs so you have cleared it up for me. I have already opened it up and taken it off the board.

I order all my components from Digikey and there the differences that I can see between the plugs are

Rated Voltage: they have 100VAC connectors, 30VAC connectors and 30V connectors

Current rating they have 0.5A , and 1A. with 1.8A ( per contact I’m assuming) and 3A. So I know that I can always put a bigger value one in without causing and damage rather than using a smaller rated one.

So I think I’ll go with the 100VAC one with 1.8A per contact.

Again that you very much for your help Jay.

Cheers

@Tommy Duris

I thought that Digikey also provided datasheets with the connectors that gives mechanical details about them besides electrical specs. but I haven't checked for a while. I know the mouser.com did also.

That will help to see the mounting lug position better

Cheers
