Should I trust what my repair place is telling me?

Hi Guys,

I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I'm hoping just to get some second opinions on my issue. I had a old Macbook retina A1398 early 2013 which I had repaired less than a year ago for numerous issues.

One of the issues was the keyboard which I had replaced with a new one. 6 months after the repair, a problem developed where multiple keys were being activated on any keypress. All repairs are supposed to be covered by warranty for up to 1 year. The repair place has now taken a look and they're telling me that the issue was caused by liquid spillage caused by me but I honestly don't have any recollection of every doing so. The strange thing is when they repaired it and I picked it up, I thought to myself the keyboard doesn’t feel like it’s sitting right.

They've sent me some images and I can't really see what they're trying to show me. Everything I see looks just like general use of a keyboard.

it does look like some kind of liquid damage mayve been there, humid enviorment maybe? some slight stains like that mightve appeared even if you didnt actually spill anything on it.

Yea not really sure. I just wish I knew if it was indeed caused by me, but I hate to feel like I'm being taken advantage of.

I see some worn keycaps (shiny spots) I also see some debris, I don’t see anything excessive from what I would generally see when I encounter a keyboard that would have been liquid damaged. The little surface dirt around the O and L keys can’t be the cause of the a stuck key.

What keys where you encountering issues with?

More often I see swelled battery messing things up.

Update (04/16/2021)

OK so lets look as how a keyboard works as that can help you see the keyboard is not your issue! If you had a constant set of keys throwing up odd responses then I could see this as a keyboard issue. In this case any key creates different responses and different keys are effected. This is a symptom of a cable or logic board failure!

A keyboard is a grid similar to how a spreadsheet works with columns and rows. So an error in a row will effect that row and likewise an error within a given column will only effect that column,

I’m suspecting the keyboard cable is damaged or the connector on the logic board is. Review this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Anfang 2013 Logic Board austauschen, jump down to Step 24 is the ribbon cable properly seated is it in good shape?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for replying back to me. The issue that I have with the keyboard is that keypresses were activating multiple keys at the same, none of the keys were stuck. I would press the cmd key for example and the brightness would start going up or down. The option key might make the sound go up or down. x,c,v etc might activate other random characters. I received another reply from the company and he sent me some pictures trying to indicate more clearly what he thinks are the points of liquid damage: https://imgur.com/a/c94V8xS

@shapingdestiny - I can't see this little bit of dirt as an issue. Its not a liquid spill I would have expected much more than this.

OK, so it makes no difference which keys any key will fire off something else as well. You don't see a pattern of action and response here? As an example I press the D key and the keyboard backlight goes up and I see the icon on the screen.

@danj Yes almost all keys seem to trigger something random.
