Why won't my dishwasher drain, fill, or turn on now?

After finishing a cycle a few weeks ago, I noticed my dishwasher didn't drain. I tried all the normal things and it still didn't work so I manually emptied the water with a cup and made sure there was no debris anywhere and filled it with some hot water, vinegar, and baking soda. I let it set for a while a and turned it on and the water drained. I then loaded it with dirty dishes and went to start it and it came on but no water would come out. I gave up for a while and when my brother in law was here (he lives a ways away) today we looked at it and he said he's not hearing the switch in the floater valve thing so he thinks thats the problem of why it won't fill. He told me i can fill it myself and it should work enough until I replace the switch. So I fill it turn it on, it runs its first cycle and drains. I fill it again the entire cycle is over so I open the dishwasher and the bottom is full of water again. I tried to turn it on again and now it won't even start. I'm at a loss and don't know where to begin or what to try.
