Computer turns on yet monitors say no signal

So, earlier today my monitors randomly went black. The PC was still on but it was clear that it had either crashed or froze, since it didn’t respond to anything. I turned my PC's power on and off and since then I’ve been getting no signal on both displayports and hdmi cables on both my monitors. The PC turns on like usual - fans spinning, no unusual noise - yet my monitors can’t get a signal. I’ve tried DVI, displayports and hdmi cables on both a rtx 2060 card and two different 970s, so I’m confident its not a GPU issue.

If anyone has an idea of what could be causing this please reach out. Would be much appreciated.

Hi @mikebach,

What is the make and model number of the PC or the motherboard if a custom build?

Can you get into BIOS with a display?

von

I have a Z170A MSI motherboard with an intel graphics card, 16gb of ram, i-7 6700k, rtx 2060 and a cooler master v1000 PSU.

After removing the gaming GPUs completely I managed to get a signal to my 1080p monitor through an hdmi cable from the motherboard's intel graphics card. However, the computer is still struggling since there are green, flickering pixels on the monitor. I also tried plugging the hdmi cable into my 4k monitor but there I get no signal. I'm clearly not very smart about this sort of stuff but from what I've read online I'm thinking that it's my PSU that is struggling to provide enough power. I've tried reseating ram, disconnecting various other stuff, resetting the cmos through BIOS and by removing it and still nothing.

Started having this exact same issue today! After multiple HDMI leads and even trying a display port into HDMI it's still having the same issue.

Can anyone help fix this as I am starting to think it's a graphics card issue as that's what my HDMI plugs into. Don't fancy forking out shed loads on a new graphics card if it can be fixed.

Thanks in advance

There are too many people having the same problem. So it has to be something within Microsofts system. Myself and many have done all the recommended fixes and nothing works. It also happens randomly. Sometimes it works just fine for several weeks and then stops. Microsoft will have to figure out the problem (bug) and send a fix. Hope it is soon as this interfere with my work. By the way, I have a very nice PC system, so I don't think it is my cords, graphic card, bad monitor, or old drivers. It is something in the system. What do you think?

Hi @pamp42466

Being intermittent makes it difficult but have you verified that the PC is passing POST (Power On Self Test) before it boots into Windows just in case it is not an OS problem but a hardware problem?

Normally the PC makers logo displays before the PC boots into Windows but if "fast startup" has been enabled in Windows sometimes you don't get to see the maker's splash screen on startup before it boots into Windows as it's too quick.

You may also hear a "beep" for a successful POST but nowadays a lot of PCs don't have a system speaker (example only) installed anymore, as it's considered unnecessary although there is still provision on most motherboards to have one connected.. They are useful because PCs still have "beep error codes' that tell the user what is wrong with the hardware when a PC fails to start correctly and doesn't pass POST.

One way to check for the maker's logo screen is to disable fast startup in Windows (it only adds a few seconds to the boot time) and check.

  • Press Win + x keys (both together) and then click on the Power Options link that appears in the menu box.
  • In the Power and Sleep window, click on Additional power settings (right side of page)
  • In the All Control panel items > Power Options window, in the left pane, click on Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Next, click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck the Turn on fast startup (recommended) option
  • Click Save changes to apply the changes and restart the PC in the normal manner for the change to come into effect. It may take awhile to shut down and restart but after this first time it is hardly noticeable.

If you don't get the maker's logo then it may be a POST problem.

If your monitor is displaying "No Input Signal," there is no image displayed from your PC to your monitor. Unplug the cable running from your monitor to your PC and plug it back in, making sure the connection is firm. The most common cause of this error is a loose cable.

Otherwise kindly check out more methods in the post that you cna just try to fix the issue on your own.
