Why is my ipad showing lines on screen and restarting itself?

Recently my girlfriend's iPad pro 9.7” (A1673) has begun showing what I can only describe as some kind of graphics glitch, though I'm not sure if its related to graphics processing at all. The iPad hasn’t been physically damaged to our knowledge (dropped, gotten wet etc.)

Suddenly lines appear across the screen, which are usually similar to the colours currently on screen (see image link at the bottom). The display then fades to black, with backlight still on. The iPad then restarts itself after a few seconds. The reboot is normally successful, however, last night it entered a boot loop until the power button was held down. I was then able to turn it on successfully.

The error only seems to occur when the iPad is actively being used (i.e. not when left on but showing screensaver). If you continue to use the iPad after the issue occurs, it will reoccur soon after, with the time between errors reducing each time (until eventually entering a boot loop as described in the previous paragraph). If, however, the iPad is left inactive for a while after the error, it seems that you can use it for a greater period of time before the error occurs again (almost as if the iPad needs to rest).

The error doesn't seem to correspond with any particular software usage. The only time we noted the use at the time of crash, Safari was being used for browsing.

I've tried a full factory reset, with no back up restored after the reset. However, the error has since occurred. This presumably rules out software issues.

Today my girlfriend took her iPad to the Apple store for inspection. Unfortunately, they weren't able to diagnose the problem in store and told her it couldn't be fixed. As it's out of warranty, they suggested she purchase a replacement. Unfortunately, this isn't an option right now due to our current financial situation.

I'm far from an electronics expert but I do own the tools required to open an iPad (heat gun etc.) and a multimeter for diagnostics. I've also performed some soldering repairs on my laptop when instructed by helpful people on forums!

If anyone is willing to help me diagnose the problem and provide guidance on how to fix it, I'll be extremely grateful!

UPDATE: After writing this, the iPad exhibited some more strange behaviour. When the iPad is turned off, it triggered the lines to appear (see video link below). This happened twice in a row.

hello Yianni,

the fluctuations described by you concern the graphics processing system, and more precisely the logic block power supply, co-powering the processor and its built-in GPU. The bug is not fatal yet, but will turn into one if not fixed.

The problem is probably one of the coupling capacitor that just got worn out due to the enormous number of cycles (charge/discharge - cycles in kHz per second). Its malfunction (possibly dumps a large load to the ground) causes a lot of confusion among other connected subsystems. Unfortunately, it has to do with its temperature. When a tablet is used, the amount of heat generated by the entire device affects its physico-electrical behavior (semiconductor behavior).

At the moment, the only method of finding a damaged capacitor (or several) is to use a specialized tool called an oscilloscope (sometimes a bit of luck and skilled eyes are enough, but I wouldn't expect that this time). The multimeter will not be able to detect any irregularities - because this is not what this tool is for. Find a good repair shop - the tablet is not meant to be repaired - most parts are glued and disposable. Usually, in the wrong hands, components get damaged when try to remove or they are reinstalled without realizing that they are damaged.

Thanks, that's really helpful information! I was just wondering whether you might also know roughly how much a repair like this might cost?

The reason I ask is because most repair shops charge a considerable amount just for diagnostics. If it's likely that the repair will be too expensive to proceed with, then I'd rather not pay the cost of diagnostics in the first place. If, however, the repair is unlikely to be very expensive, then I would happily take it to a repair shop.

this is what makes a good repair shop different from the bad one. You have to look - it is a bit like looking for a good car repair service, where the mechanic will not deceive you, will not stretch you into unnecessary repairs, finally has enough knowledge to find the fault and fix it. In mobile device repair bussines - most people just change ics with no knowladge what is that i what job has to do. Yes, thats unacceptable. how much can it cost? hard to say. It all depends what's your location. It seems to me that the more expensive it is, the more likely someone will not be able to fix it - but it doesn't have to be a rule
