Why does the fridge shut off when I close the door?

This whirlpool wrb322dmbm01 is only 14 months old. Since this morning it has decided to shut off when ever the door is closed. I have left the door closed for a few hours to see if it was just doing a defrost cycle. It will not turn back on to cool unless the refrigerator door is opened. As soon as the light switch is hit in the fridge section both the fridge and freezer stop being cooled. My food has gotten warm and my ice has melted. I tried to get it into service mode but it will not work.

Hi @dnjheard

When the door switch operates it sends a signal to the control board so that it knows that the door is open and to turn off the evap fan, but not the compressor. When the door is shut again that signal is removed and the evap fan should start again that is if it was operating in the first place.

Here's the tech sheet for the refrigerator. It details how to run the diagnostics and also has the wiring diagram. The door switch signal lead (along with a few others) goes to control board connector J1 pin 4 - FF LIT.

Hopefully this is of some help.

When you close the door of a refrigerator, the fridge may shut off due to a mechanism called the door switch. The door switch is a small, spring-loaded switch that is typically located near the hinge of the door Tower of London. When the door is closed, the switch is pressed in, and when the door is opened, the switch is released.

The purpose of the door switch is to turn off the fridge's interior light and any other electrical components when the door is closed to conserve energy. It also helps maintain the temperature inside the fridge by ensuring that the cold air stays inside the refrigerator compartment.

What do you mean “As soon as the light switch is hit in the fridge section both the fridge and freezer stop being cooled.“? Your description of the refrigerator becoming warm and ice melting after opening and closing the doors may be pointing to loose wiring connections or maybe something simple like adjusting the temperature control. If readjusting temperature control doesn’t improve then you may have to call Whirlpool for service especially if its still under warranty.

Wow. 14 months it worked fine and then this very odd thing. It’s not clear what you mean by stops cooling. When you have the door open I assume you are saying that the compressor is running which you should be able to hear. Then if you push the door closed button with your finger with the door open, does that turn off the compressor? The circuit which turns your compressor off and on is controlled by a thermostat which you can sort of adjust (as F.Dryer, mentions)- but it worked fine for 14 months. The circuit that turns the light on and off has no connection with the compressor logic. If you can turn the compressor on and off with the door switch somebody has to check the wiring.

In the meantime you could Magiver the thing: Make a hole in the door opposite of the switch button so the light doesn’t turn off (take the bulb out too), and neither does the compressor. When you get it fixed you can fill the hole with something.

I have this identical problem exactly. Banging the electronic control board seems to intermittently help...

@Ben Kermoyan, is your refrigerator still under warranty? (electronics and sealed refrigeration system have separate warranty periods)

I am having the same problem. Could it be a control board issue or a bad door switch? HELP...

@dnjheard

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

Is the power being lost on the refrigerator or is it that the compressor just stops working and won't restart? Check if the lights still work?

I called Whirlpool and they were useless. By blind luck, I figured out that 1 of the 2 LARGE orange capacitors had a cracked solder joint. 1$ later and some quick iron work and the fridge works flawlessly again

I had the same problem, i finally corrected it, by dismantling the control board and get it to inspection, iy turned out that one capacitator is burnt, replaced the capacitor and re-install it and now refrigerator works perfect.... total cost is 20 $....

so i recommend to you to dismantle the board and get it to any PLC technician to test and repair.....
