Cut off power when turned on

Hello,i have very specific problem with my notebook, when i plug in only charger it try to turn on but after about 1 sec it shut down. When i insert battery it starts normaly but runs power only from battery even when charger is connected. Battery drain and notebook shut down and then it start charging, when i turned it on again it stop again. A lot of peaople have problem that their notebook didnt charge but mine cut off input power totaly. It is taking power from charger only if notebook is shutted down, or when i close screen and notebook sleeps. I have cut charger wires to see if voltage of charger isnt dropping voltage under load but it stais +- 0,5V in rated range.

Please help, thank you.

Hi @janco93 ,

What is the model number of the laptop?

Charge the battery with the laptop turned off and then turn on the laptop and create a battery report and check the status of the battery. Compare the Design Capacity value against the Full Charge capacity value. The values will be nearly the same for a good battery.

It may be that the battery is failing and the charger cannot do both, run the laptop and charge the battery.

Just trying to eliminate and isolate what the problem may be.

Hi, i have clamp ampere meter, when computer is turned off, sleeping or in bios it draws power about 1,4A from charger and functions without battery too. If i try start it without battery it start shows lenovo logo and shut down. When i insert battery it is chyrging till i power it on, ampere meter shows 0 till i turned it off, so battery is discharging. Battery got left about 40 minutes of life it is old but i dont think battery is issue, notebook should run without it or combined power, but it cut off power when it is on. Is there some kind of setting what can i do ? I have tried reset bios by inplug small battery inside and also factory settings in bios, and uninstall and istall battery manager in device manager. Notebook is Lenovo Ideapad G500, i5 3230, 8gb ram, hybrid drive 500Gb, some kind of amd graphics.

All I can now suggest is to check the power circuits on the motherboard.

Here's a link to the schematics (verify that your motherboard make and model is a Compal LA-963 1P to be sure I've linked the correct one.

All the power schematics are between p.45 & p.58.

On p.58 there is a Power sequence block diagram which may help as it shows what components are in play when either the AC or the battery is being used.

Something is telling the software that there is something wrong when the charger is connected and the battery so hopefully this may help

Hello, thank you for help. It is too complicated for me. I have manage to borrow another charger and it works, so problem solved :-) . But according to voltage and amperage measurement both chargers are OK but my old cut off power when pc start, anyway i have to buy brand new.

Had the exact same problem, tried everything from new charger to replacement battery and connection plugs, even fiddled with different resistor sizes. Then about an hour ago i tried enabling and disabling the battery saving mode in Lenovo Vantage and voila! it just started charging again. Right now when i unplug and reconnect power, the problem comes back but goes away as soon as i enable+disable that stupid option. Hope it helps.
