Speakers suddenly aren't working

Can't get audio out through either speaker. Used the Samsung test screen to check and they are testing fine, but other applications and even system sounds aren't playing.

Worked fine yesterday, the phone hasn't been dropped or gotten wet these past 24 hours.

I'm suspecting software issues, but reluctant to backup and factory reset before trying anything else.
