Vaio SVE15126CVP sudden screen corruption and failure to boot

Our venerable Sony Vaio, which was working fine last night, is now showing screen corruption as soon as it’s switched on and then failing to boot into Windows.

I’m guessing this is a hardware failure, most likely something on the logic board, and that it’s probably not worth repairing given the age of the laptop?

The issue may be caused eg by a corrupted graphics driver.  In this case, appropriate troubleshooting steps include:

  • Reinstall the graphics driver.  Reinstalling a separate driver can be done through the VAIO Recovery Center options.
  • Check for driver updates. Especially graphics driver and BIOS updates are related to this.
  • If the problem started recently, restore the system to a date before the problem started.
  • Check Device Manager for
  • Run a complete system recovery.  Instructions for this can be found in the Troubleshooting and Recovery Guide that came with your VAIO.  It can also be located in the Documentation section.

Could it really be a graphic driver issue, given the problem manifests the instant you switch on, while the BIOS is in control and before it's loaded any drivers?

There are no driver updates any more. Sony ceased support about a year ago.

gdubai this most certainly looks like an issue with the GPU. Connect an external monitor and see what that displays. Ultimately you will have to take a closer look at the motherboard. Let us know exactly what motherboard this is so that we can try and help you further with this.

I tried hooking up an external monitor, and no luck - it won't initialise the HDMI video output until it's booted into Windows, which it won't do. I do have a backup image I can restore from, but I don't see much point; the screen corruption occurs from the moment you power on, so it's not Windows-related.

How do I identify the motherboard? Will it have a physical ID number printed on it somewhere? This is a Vaio model that was only sold in the Middle East, so looking up the model number isn't very helpful.

Ah, I can see that if I can get Windows booting, I can look up the motherboard info that way.

gdubai there will be markings on the motherboard that will help identify which one it is. Take some pictures of the board (once you know you are going to have to tear it down to work on it), Post those with your question.
