Having a problem with iPhone 3GS texting with no Sim

I've upgraded my 3GS iphone to the new 4S iPhone. I want to give my old 3GS to my daughter to use as an "iTouch". We've upgraded the 3GS to iOS5 and attached it to the iCloud with her own separate account.

I'd like for the 3GS to be able to text me at 4S - yet it is the same phone number the 3GS use to be, it doesn't seem to work.

I've also tried to text from the 3GS to another iTouch we have (new, 4th gen). Yet it just texts to an email address. It doesn't appear as a text/imessage/sms.

Is there a setting I'm missing? I'd really like it to show as a Text and not an email.

I'm 90% sure you need a SIM to text...otherwise the phone has no idea where to send your signal except through the internet and I guess in your case in the form of an email

change that to 100%...SMS or text or whatever you want to call them need a SIM card. The phone number is attached to the SIM card and not the phone. I'd suggest buying a pay as you go SIM and paying for a text only package...

Phillip is right, you cannot text without a phone number. The 3G has no number since it was transfered to your other device.

A work around for your problem is to download a texting app from the app store. This should allow you to text from the 3G to another phone. You will have to be on WiFi though.

Just a thought, can you perhaps trick it via imessage to at least text when you're at a wi-fi spot?

If I go settings > messages I get an option "use your apple ID for iMessages"

Sorry if I end up just wasting your time :)
