Hi @meh7777

Check in BIOS for a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) setting, (enable/disable). I'm not sure if your laptop has a TPM module or not

If the laptop doesn't have TPM 2.0, Win 11 won't work anyway. (it may only have TPM 1.2 or none at all).

You can’t upgrade the CPU because the CPU is hard mounted onto the systemboard

However, you can improve performance by replacing the HDD with an SSD and also upgrading the ram. (max. 16GB - 2 x 8GB modules)

Here’s a link that shows what SSDs and ram are compatible with the laptop. (Supplier example only to what it may cost and what you need - there are a lot of other suppliers but you now know what to look for that suits you i.e. type of ram and SSD)

Here’s the ifixit Dell Inspiron 17R-5737 guides that show how to replace the HDD and the ram.

Honestly, most of the 8th gen laptops with TPM 2.0 (95% of them) are a good deal for the money if you can find a good one.

The one I'm working on (840 G5) with that obnoxious BIOS password (I may have mentioned it here, but never really in Answers as I shelved it until I secured a replacement motherboard) is a excellent candidate if you can get it for a reasonable price for sure, but for many the G6 is a better deal unless you can snag the G5 for a deep discount. The way I'm getting a 8th gen HP makes zero sense in many cases, but I got the thing cheap, as well as the donor. You can get a cheap donor that's "untested" sure but I paid a few bucks for mine on purpose since it was tested but sold as a rough unit.

Hey, its Aug 2023 and I just found my old Dell Inspiron 17R-5737 in a closet and decided to take a look at it. I couldn't turn it on because, obviously, the battery was drained and I couldn't find the power supply. I knew it had a HDD and 8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB each) so....I went online and for $63.00 total, I purchase a Power Supply, a WD 500GB SA510 SSD (WDS500G3B0A), and a kit of Timetec (16GB KIT) DDR3L/DDR3 1600MHz (DDR3L-1600) PC3L-12800 204 Pin SODIMM. It took me 5 hours to Clone the HDD to SSD via USB using Acronis and 5 minutes to install both SSD and 16 GB memory. Now, I have a very very fast and capable 17 inch screen laptop. I do have two other newer laptops which are my primary use laptops with all the newer technology but now I have my old Dell 17R-5737 which I can use as a fallback and not have to wait 15 minutes for it to turn on and allow me to open one (1) application at a time. Got to tell you, the $63 dollars, well worth it! No TPM so you can forget upgrading to Windows 11 on this laptop.

Even when you could upgrade before mobile became “BGA only” parts, it usually wasn’t cost-effective as the laptop has other compromises you’ll probably want to address as well at the same time, like a spinning hard drive upgrade. If you had a junk laptop or you got the CPU for practically nothing and you could gut it without damage sure it may work out (and I have done that before when I had a nice one with a big issue I could fix, but the other one is shot) but unless you get 2 identical units and can make one, it tends to be costly and time-consuming. It has to be WORTH IT because of how much you may want to upgrade.

The cost-effective play for dealing with these machines is to find a used machine that’s got the right CPU and move the SSD if you can swap it yourself. For example, when I looked and planned to buy, I went from an EliteBook 840 G3 (Skylake) to the G5 revision with an i7-8550U/4K IPS (400 nits/60Hz) screen. Might as well seeing as I got it super cheap from a seller who didn’t know what they had and priced it as if it had the common FHD LCD (even though it caught me off guard to the point I had to see if it was factory - yes, it is) :-). I was like “there’s no way this is as good as it looks - what’s busted and expensive?”. None - just a good deal but I also got extremely lucky. Sometimes you can even just swap boards but even then, the cost issue comes into play here; boards can cost as much as a whole laptop without an SSD (which can carry from your old laptop anyway). You can always sell the old laptop to a student or someone who doesn’t mind the fact the laptop now has a built-in expiration date per Microsoft.

I am unsure if you can upgrade your CPU but I have heard and seen Evidence that Windows 11 isn’t fully optimized for gaming yet, I would stick to Windows 10 unless you have a specific reason to move up to 11.

Thank you. I need to upgrade it anyway if possible. Its getting really slow. If anybody knows if I can and how, I would appreciate it. Inspiron 17R-5737.

So, you want to upgrade because your PC is slow? Why would you do that? That would just make it more slow.@meh7777
