Metal Bracket or No Metal Bracket

I've read some comments about leaving the bracket off of the screen/digitizer but no final conclusion.

asle, Garry, jimcook.

This is my 4th repair and I am going to leave the metal bracket off this time. Does anybody know if leaving it off has any affect on anything?

It does make contact with the little spring on the top right and also on top of the metal that is wrapped with copper tape where the dig cable rests. To the left of the front camera.

I think the screen sits better without the metal bracket when I do a dry run but I am curious of my fellow iPod Touch 4th Gen repairers opinions.

Ist dies eine gute Frage?

I have done well over 100 4th Gen Touch screen swaps and have only put that bracket on maybe 5 times...No problems. Leave it off.

Thank's for for your input. From now on I will leave it off. The last one I did, I filed off the 3 tabs and put it on. I was thinking because it makes contact in two places that it was somewhat important.

I'll be putting it back together tomorrow and I will let you know how it went.....Joe in PA

Everything went o.k. Left off the metal bracket and no problems.

That clip helps hold the screen down on the top. I am sure that apple would not waste the time or money to install millions of them if they did not do a better job with it, than without. I own a repair shop and if I remove anything from a phone it gets put back in the phone. I do this everyday and I do not pretend to know more about these devices than the manufacturer does. I do not want a reputation for leaving out things in a device. Sure way to ruin a reputation real quick.

Not sure how the lcd will hold on to the thin frame., since there is not too much room in the upper left and upper right area to affix to. The other problem in leaving the frame off is that if you have broken glass near the side plastic frame there are shards of glass that have to be taken off and in taking these pieces of glass off you end up taking off the adhesive that apple originally put on the ipod If you have to put new adhesive on the 3m adhesive is not nearly as sticky and your whole screen will come off in time. The design with the metal bracket is annoying but it usually stays put. It is hard to know if this bracket is essential in the reconstruction of the device. Only time will tell if our repairs seem to come apart by themselves do to improper or lazy repair. Heat will tell in the summer and time will be the answer

Hi, if anyone has one of those metal brackets they they would consider selling, could they please get in touch via dean dot stickells at gmail dot com pls ? I purchased an iPod Touch 4th gen with a broken screen as an easy fix for my daughter but someone has already tried to replace it and lost the bracket so, although fixed and working fine now - it shows pressure when pressed even gently in the top corners... I'd really like to make it a perfect fix if anyone can help.

Thanks in advance.

You don't need the metal bracket but you can get one on ebay. I have at least ten of them and will give one to you for nothing.

You must make sure all the old adhesive is completely cleaned off and also the digitizer cable is folded properly.

This has been mentioned many times in Q and A

There could be other reasons for the pressure you are getting.

It's all a matter of experience and trial and error.

The new screen must sit flat before you apply the adhesive because the 3M adhesive will not pull the screen down if the corners are sticking up...but if there is just a slight bit sticking up the adhesive will probably pull it down. Hope it all works out for you.

Hi Joe,

I have spent a fair bit of time researching this point and there seem to be many mixed views. The screen is definitely sitting flat and I can see that the issue is caused by the front glass pressing too far back into the case and bending the LCD hence the desire to replace the bracket.

I searched eBay but could only find one and the seller wouldn't post outside the US. If you would be kind enough to help me with one, I would be most grateful and of course pay the postage at very least. I you could email me (dean dot stickells at gmail dot com) I can provide my address and get your PayPal details in return.

Thanks again.

Dillon,

you actually do not need the spring to make the ipod functional. I have done hundreds of screen replacements and often times I do not have the spring and I have never had a problem and so far no customers have had issues. I never sweat it if it is missing.

Tyler,

Was the EMI shield bent at all? Sometimes you have to bend it back to normal to get it to work. Have you tried another home button?

I'm having a problem with a home button. (sorry if this is a bit off topic).

The home button clearly depresses the flex ribbon on the metal plate, but results in nothing. When I take any other metal object (tweezers, screwdriver, etc.) it works! The back of the iPod home button is clearly metal, yet it does not work. Nothing is obstructing it from alignment. Any advice as to what may be causing this would be greatly appreciated. I'm baffled. Thank you.

Hey guys, my screen shattered but still displays. My digitizer cable is cut so obviously it doesn't make the touch screen function work,But with movement my metal bracket fell off including the small spring and since the top part is completely gone the screen still displays so I'm guessing or asking you fellow fixers Can I still fix it without the spring and bracket? I'm asking because I'm attempting my first iPod fix. And can I get any tutorial suggestions please.

Thanks for your time-Erick
