I plug earbuds into the audio jack and hear nothing. I plug it into a charge base with built in speakers and I hear nothing. I have tried restore twice and that did not help.

Given that you know your speaker system is working, your logic board needs to be replaced. Looks like you can get a refurbished one on ebay for 50 dollars. And here is a guide on how to replace it iPod 5. Generation (Video) Logic Board austauschen

I have discovered that when I connect to my computer with the usb cable that I can play songs from the Ipod and have audio through my computer speakers.

Bobby, check on here Why is no sound coming out of the headphone jack or dock? It does tell you all about it...:-)
