PC Won't boot up!

My cousin's Dell Desktop won't boot up to Vista. When he turns the machine on it goes into a black screen and says "Disk Error" It also states "diskette 0 seek failure" and to depress CTRL_ALT_DELETE to restart. I recommended this site to him for future reference cause he cannot access the web in order to get help and trouble-shoot himself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How can I boot into the Vista CD???

von

When you turn on the computer there should be a screen telling you what key to press to enter the boot menu. (Usually esc.) If you can get to the boot menu arrow down to advanced and select primary boot drive. Change to the CD drive and save. Reboot and it should try to boot from the optical drive. Ralph

Also, if you check the manual, it usually lists the key combination that will work for your machine.

Thanks for the help Rj and Rab. It turns out that my hunch was right, the machine was trying to boot into a diskette drive that it didn't even have. LOL, don't ask my how that happened. Anyway, He brought the PC over and I changed the boot sequence to Hard Disk first and completely disabled the diskette drive and Wha-la, machine booted fine. All is good so far. Once again, thanks for the help guys.

Here's something you should check out.

The message means the computer can't find the hard drive, so Dell suggests opening it up and checking for a loose cable. Probably it's just a fried drive, if your cousin does not have a backup, I suggest he runs data rescue to recover lost files. No idea where to get replacement drive though, you should probably contact dell, and also see what type of drive it is.

Edit: here's the page with info on how to access the drive, and what drive it is.

Thanks for the links Rab, but the problem is that we're trying to identify the problem before we open the machine. The error code means that there's a loose cable or that system and hardware configurations dont match, which means it can be a software issue. I have never dealt with this machine or these symptoms so I'm trying to get as much info. as I can before we take it apart.

+ for the great links.

Actually I give them some love. I've built a dozen or so starting with a Heathkit years age. Back to your problem with Dell your cousin can find a wide variety of repair and system software on ebay that is genuine Dell. Have you tried to boot into the safe mode? If you can safe boot run his anti-virus and malware software. After that depending on his OS pick a restore point before the problem began. Failing that it usually easy to access the innards of a PC to do a quick visual inspection. Good luck. Ralph

Thanks RJ, how do I boot into safe mode with this machine?

von

The usual way to boot into safe mode is to keep tapping F8 after the boot screen clears but before Windows starts. Ralph

The peoblem lies in the boot sequence so I dont believe it will start into safe mode. I will try when he gets home, but in the meantime I hope to get more detailed description of what could be causing this.

You could have a bad hard drive.

garycfuchs, great answer, but in this case the OP had found the problem about 2 years ago " the machine was trying to boot into a diskette drive that it didn't even have."

The key to aces BIOS is commonly F2 or Delete on standard PC's and F12 or F10 on Dell, Compaq, HP, Lenovo and IBM

If the system will not boot up (no disk found) you may need a boot-up dist that knows SATA hard drive to boot or you can create one using nLite and one windows cd / dvd (this problem is commonly found on Toshiba systems)

You can try system restore by using a windows CD to boot in and the follow the steps below:

Open start menu click run and then type cmd to open command prompt.

Type CD.. to make c:\ only.

Type CD windows then CD System32 and then restore.

After once you find yourself in c:\ windows\system32\restore>

Then type restrui.exe press enter.

Once the system restore window open then click next to select any available restore point.

This process shall take couple of minutes to perform restore and please make sure that once this process started it wont be reversible and neither you will lose any personal data.

Other way to perform system restore is to open safe mode by clicking F8 on start-up and check safe mode option then further a dialogue box will open to ask for system restore and then follow the above steps. Thanks
