USB port works to charge iPhone but won't mount external hard drive.

I've run disk utility (First Aid button) on the external drive and there are no noted problems.

After running First Aid, the "mount" button is still greyed out. I've tried restarting without any impact on the situation.

I can plug my iPhone into both USB ports and it is recognized without problem.

The external drive is automatically mounted and fully functional on my other Macbook. I have a second external drive on my other Macbook which works fine and plugged it into both problematic USB ports and does not mount.

I have switched USB cables without any change to above described condition. That my iPhone is recognized without problem but not the external drive is confusing.

Is there a way to reset USB ports or does anyone have another suggestions. My Macbook is from 2009 and I'm running OX-X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Your time is greatly appreciated.

Aloha Dan,

Mahalo for your reply. I have a MacBook Pro, 15", Mid 2009. 8 GB Memory 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB Graphics Card. I use the 5GB Seagate External Drive for Time Machine Backups.

It is perplexing that the computer recognizes both iPhone as well iPad, but for some reason not the external HD which it always did until recently. and even though all above devices are plugged into the same USB ports. Any thoughts or insights are greatly appreciated.

@danj

So here's another piece of intel that may or may not be relevant as I am looking around. In my Get Info Dialog Box I am looking at the storage tab. I have a 500 GB HD. Of that, I have about 155 GB worth of Audio, Photos, Apps, Movies, Backups - and 345 GB of "Other", leaving me only 1.4GB of free space. Being my older machine, I have purged much of the files that I've wanted to keep, but can't imagine what the remainder of "Other" Constitutes. I suspect temporary startup files is a portion of that, but don't know how to zero in on what "other" may be, nor how to purge it. Do you think this may contribute to the problem of not being able to mount the external HD and if so, do you know how to purge "Other". Thanks Dan

Aloha! Which Island on you on? I have found memories visiting Wahiawa years ago!

There are a few system clearers which can delete old log and temp files. Use one from the App Store so you know its not messing you us as some free tools intact steal information from your temp files!

@danj

Aloha Dan - Iive on the Big Island but know Wahiawa well. I'll look into the system cleaners - do you think that may be the issue or was there anything in the system specs I previously provided that sparked any thoughts about my issue? Mahalo

Mahalo for your kind reply Marcia. It is a case of knowing some but not knowing all - a reflection of life itself I suspect, as much a computer. I will keep on, keeping on, and perhaps someone will know more than I, of which I am sure there are many.

OK I think I see the issue! Your 2009 system offers USB2 Type A ports unlike the newer 2011 and onward systems which offer USB3 Type A ports.

For reference here's the Type A sockets

USB2

USB3

Note the extra pins so depending on the device it maybe strictly USB3 as such it can't communicate with your older MacBook Pro.

OK Dan - Mahalo for your input and information. It make's perfect sense, though I could swear it worked some months ago and have the timeline backups on the HD to show it. Be that as it may, those were some months back and maybe I swapped a cable and just don't remember. I'll see if I can find a compatible cable somewhere and give that a go. I do so appreciate your time and expertise - I know a bit about computers - but clearly many things are way over my head - this being the perfect example.

BTW - I just read your profile and appreciate reading of your evolution and the spirit you bring forward in your life wanting to be of service to folks like me. Many thanks for the Grace with which you engage it all. Malama Pono a hui hou, brother!
