Oven won't stay lit unless bottom plate is removed

The pilot stays lit and I can get the oven to turn on but after several minutes the gas turns off (pilot, also.) However, if I keep the bottom plate of oven removed then the oven stays lit. But once I replace the bottom plate inevitably the oven stops working.
