Whats the maximum memory you can put in a 24" 2.8Ghz Intel

Hi,

What's the maximum memory you can put in a late 2007 24" 2.8Ghz Intel core 2 duo extreme iMac.

I know at present it's 6gb, though I believe this can change with newer OS, which allows your machine to read more.

My understanding here is associated to previous experience with an old PowerMac G4 AGP, that had the slots to hold 4x 512mb cards, though on the early OS could only read 3 = 1.5gb, until I updated to OS X then it would read all 4 = 2gb.

So in thinking this way, has anyone here tried to run this machine fitted with 2 x 4gb RAM memory and if so, did it work..?

Any up dates on this would be great..

The RAM limitations are hardware/firmware related. No operating system can overcome how the chips on the motherboard are programed or what the EFI will allow.

@ ABCellars.... Well regards my old PowerMac G4 AGP, it defiantly was firmware and not hardware as the RAM was already fitted in the machine. It wasn't until I installed the new OS, which at that time was OS X Puma or Jaguar that the forth RAM Memory slot was recognized giving me an overall memory of 2gb, so I'm assuming that the new firmware was incorporated with in it ..!

So saying this, this was an actual physical slot that became visible in the G4, through up-dated firmware within newer OS.

So why can't they do the same in this situation and update the firmware so these iMac's will read 2 x 4gb RAM Modules, it can't be that hard really, can it..!?

I fully agree with you that Apple should remove the limitations on RAM it defined with the firmware. The chips on the motherboard are capable of handling more. Apple decided to throttle them down for some reason.

@ ABCellars.... Are you aware of anyone who has created custom firmware for these machines, so they can read 8gb of memory...?

I've seen no change in the amount of RAM this machine will take, maybe if you provide a link to newer information we can research it: *Apple officially supports 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 6 GB of RAM using one 2 GB and one 4 GB memory module.

Thanks Mayer, I don't intend to buy the RAM just yet, so I'll wait and see if anyone else comments on this subject..!!

Just to add to the confirmations - I have a mid-2007 24in iMac running OS x 10.8.1 (Mountain Lion). I've just replaced both 2GB RAM modules with 2 4GB modules and System Profile displays my RAM as 8GB. Brilliant!

Ignore my previous comment :( After installing 2x4GB modules performance was very slow, my machine scored 667 on GeekBench tests (average score 3600). After replacing one 4GB module with a 2GB module (6GB RAM total) performance was a lot better with performance benchmark at 3750.

6GB is fine. 8GB doesn't work :(

Also, if you go to crucial.com you can easily select your model, etc, and it will tell you the max amount of ram along with the type you need. It also has info like if your system requires memory installed in pairs, etc.

I find their site faster than having to go to different manufacturers sites and digging around half the day for the specs.

I'm already aware of this Company, it is where I have been looking regards new RAM and that I can at least fit 6gb of memory with 1 x 2gb and 1 x 4gb cards..

Crucial's site doesn't even know that you can put one 4GB SODIMM in this model, much less two..

@ Silvalli......Yes they do as I got my 4GB Ram from them and it's fitted in this computer that I'm on now, though I would like to know if I can fit another one in the second slot..?

To be clear: Two 4GB DIMMS in this Mac function in Lion as 8GB.

All online information about this from places like everymac.com is out of date; earlier versions of the OS couldn't see all 8GB.

Someone else will have post whether 10.6 Snow Leopard sees all 8GB.
