How can I diagnose which part needs replacement?

Typical problem, iPod gives a sad face and clicking sounds after startup. I also tried to test the hd in diagnose mode, but I can only choose between hdspecs and smart data on the menu. Hdspecs gives no serial number, temperature readout of around -90k and a hd size of 96gb, even if no hd is pluged in (same with hd inside)! When I also disconnect the hd cable, then all stays the same except temp is back to 0.

So what can it be? HD, board, cable?

thx!

Thomas, the clicking and the fact that you can not check the HDD in diagnostics strongly suggest that your HDD is in need of replacement. Also, change the cable when you change the HDD. It is not uncommon for the cable to have some internal fractures. If you really want to check your drive, get a Zif-to-USB adapter and connect the drive to your computer via such a cable. If your drive is okay it will be fully accessible to you, and you could reformat etc. The instructions for your iPod are here iPod 5th Generation (Video) Hope this helps, good luck.

To your comment at Dan's answer "I wanted to ask if a damaged cable could result in the same problem or damage the drive itself", yes it can. The HDD cable can most certainly cause this, That is why it is important to use the proper cable with proper hard drive. When you say the drive you borrowed was slightly different, what was the difference. What drive is the original drive.

The only difference I noticed is the size, 80gb vs. 60gb of the original. Other than that and it being a Toshiba instead of the oroginal Hitachi, I can't think of anything else. It also has an Apple logo on it and is build for 5.5 gen Ipods according to several sources. Seems I have to wait for a new cable... I see me building a new Ipod myself soon! I'll have enough parts, that's for sure!

The Hitachi and Toshiba use different HDD cables. The cable and drive should not cost more than ~50USD and it's a great investment. there is something about the Audio on this model iPod that I like better than the newer ones :-)

von

Ok, that's interesting! I ordered a new cable and a ZIF to USB connector. I looked up several on the Net (...seems the only place on earth one could get these things is China! Certainly nowhere in a normal shop here in Germany!) and nowhere did it say which drive one has to use with it. Also, all drives I have found with the best price tag/ size combo were Toshiba ones. So if an original cable (or a copy of it) doesn't fit with a Toshiba drive, how do I recognize the right one? How do they actually differ?

von

I believe that it is the Toshiba that uses some sort of interface change. All the USB-to-Zif adapters I bought have always had both cables Hitachi and Toshiba. What drives do you have? What are the Numbers on both?

Did you drop it or get it wet?

If not sounds like the HD spindle motor is gone. Time for a new HD or iPod.

Nope, maybe it got a little shaken up in the bag but thats all... I can hear the HD spinning, then the click, spinning again and so on. What makes me confused are the numbers in the hdspecs test, whether HD is inside od unpugged... on the other hand all other tests run through without any problems.

von

The click is the head arm trying to index it's self so it can read the tracks. Even though you can hear the spindle motor running its starting to sound like the heads have crashed, which is the end of the drive.

Sorry Thomas, time for a new drive or iPad ;-(

Hey, thx for the answers! I borrowed a brand new drive today from a friend, but he didn't have the right cable or a connection to usb. A 80gb toshiba mk8010gah, slightly different but he said it should work, too.

So I couldn't really test it beyond checking whether a new drive would work, but got the same results! Same clicking sound etc. and I was REALLY gentle with it.

Ok, it is a slight possibility that the new drive is also toast and has been from the start, but before I come back to my friend and say "hey, do you have one more for me, or two or ten...?" I wanted to ask if a damaged cable could result in the same problem or damage the drive itself.
