Can't Get MacBook to Detect Battery

Hi everyone,

My MacBook Pro 15" 2017 will not acknowledge that its has a battery installed at all. Not in system information, nor in coconutBattery. I have tried SMC reset, PRAM reset, and reseating the battery connectors. One thing I would note is that the battery data cable connector has no clip. It is obvious that this has been tampered with by someone who has no clue what they are doing. Anyway, could this be the problem and is there a way to replace this clip?

I know that the battery is good and I know that the battery ribbon cable is good, so this must be logic board or software / firmware related.

Thanks, Philip

That could absolutely be the problem. All the battery related data goes through that connector (the power goes through the bus underneath that the T5 screw holds down. If the little flap is missing, you can replace it with a new one. They just sort of pop out and pop into the connector. You might have an easier time finding a new connector though rather than just the flap. And you harvest the flap off the new connector.

In a pinch i would just see if reseating the cable, or taping it/holding it down inside the connector to see if you can get it to be recognized.

Hi,

I cut a small piece of paper and put it underneath the battery data connector and it worked. I haven't had an issue with it since. I know it is very janky, but it seems to work. I don't really want to solder a new connector on, but if I see a new clip for sale, I will get it and install it. Otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't fit it!

Thanks.

@philhasbread That's as good a fix as any. If it decides to go again, at least you'll know what the problem is!
