Hi guys, ive got a simaliar problem, i followed your instructions of a Verbose mode boot, by holding command + V, but my macbookpro gets to loading everything and locks up after "vmnet : Module initialized" comes up at the bottom of the screen... i have just recently replaced the HHD, on request of the apple store tech support, was thought to be the fault of my mac locking up. have installed operating system correctly after a few tries of it locking up. but i have successfuly made it to my desktop 1 or 2 times, but now always locks up and goes to a grey screen with the power button in the background, saying" You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button untill its turns off, then press the power button again." if anyone can help it would be most appriceated.

Many thanks, Kurt

Dear Kurt,

The gray screen you're getting is a Kernel Panic (the very base of the OS crashed) which is usually caused by either the HDD failing or a faulty installation. Are you sure the new HDD isn't damaged? One way you can check is to use an install DVD:

Reboot and insert your installation DVD while holding down 'C', When you get to the part where it says welcome and whatnot, click Utilities in the menubar and choose Disk Utility. On the left, choose your HDD and click First Aid. On the bottom click Repair Disk (if thats not available click Verify Disk then Repair Disk). Once it's done click Repair Disk Permissions and then reboot. Does it work fine now? If not, try starting up in Safe Boot: Start up your Mac and as soon as you hear the chime hold Shift+Command+V. This will start it in Safe mode and Verbose mode. If it stops or loops at any point, post it here.

Hi, thanks for your help, i have tried all of the above. Finally got it to boot from instalation dvd ran disk utility. and ran repair disk. Vefified disk and no repairs were nessesary. Does this mean the HDD is ok? also rebooted went to load desktop and went to black screen and locked up. So rebooted holding shift+command+V and booted in safe mode and verbose mode. It goes to load but stops and loops at (vmnet: setting peer info for hub:8 port 0)

after that i rebooted once more and held X, as described in apple support article. its does load to desktop, but locks up and loops as soon as i move the mouse.

im not sure what else to do, as it is only 3 years old and just out of waranty. Thanks again for your help. Kurt

Well, this really does sound like a faulty installation. Are you sure your installation DVD doesn't have any bad scratchs on it?
