iBook has weak interaction with wireless network

I recently bought a used 12 inch white ibook for a grand daughter. The computer is great, but must be within about 6 feet of a wireless router to communicate. The router is fine; other computers can access it from as far as 50 feet away.

I have not been able to find any information indicating that this is a problem inherent to this computer or any thinking about why this might be happening. I could simply replace the wireless component but thought I would see if anyone on ifixit has any experience with anything similar.

Please specify your ibook model (G3 or G4, processor speed) or give us the last three digits of the machine serial number.

Your problem seems to be related to the airport antenna cable so first step is to check if the cable is well seated in the airport card socket.

Thanks. It is a g4 but I can't get more info on it as my grand daughter has it. Your response is already helpful. I will get it from her and get back to the list. --Kenoli

There are two different airport cards in the ibook G4 line. From the 800mhz to the 1.2ghz (including the 1.33ghz 14") models the card is under the keyboard, that's where you can check the antenna cable connection. On the 1.33GHz 12" and the 1.42Ghz 14" the airport card (which also has bluethoot integrated) is inside the machine near the hard disk (not easy to reach).

It is a model A1054. I opened it and the connection to the antenna is secure. I couldn't easily get to the antenna to see if there were any problems down the line. However, I discovered that it has trouble even when plugged into ethernet.

Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm considering replacing the antenna & maybe airport extreme card in our A1054 macbook G4 1GHz.
