iSight does't show in system profiler: what to replace?

Hi!

I've got a Macbook Core Duo, last serial number letters RVMN. This morning I tried using Facetime, and the iSight wasn't recognized. It doesn't even appear in the System Profiler: the USB Hi-Speed bus where it used to be connected seems sadly empty, the green light doesn't shine in my bezel anymore.

Without opening the machine, a Genius I called upon told me it could be the iSight or the Logic Board. It occurs to me that my laptop only froze up yesterday, when I tried to test my new extrnal DVD with handbrake, but nothing capital. My laptop seems in perfect working order, and yesterday, as I told, I was placing calls with Facetime.

I resetted the SMC and the PRAM, dug up my Hardware Test DVD with the original OS X Tiger (I'm on Snow Leopard now) and gave a rapid and a full test.

My computer seems fine.

Since I got charged lots for repairs, with almost no warrant that isn't a logic board issue, I ask to you friends:

Is there a way to troubleshoot who has died between the iSight and the logic board?

Which part should I replace?

UPDATE: A clean install of OS X 10.4 showed me that there's no software issue. It's all in the hardware. However, the "USB Hi-Speed" seems to be the external ports, and there's an empty "USB BUS". Is that where the iSight should be? Is there a way to rule out a Logic Board damage?

I should add, I dunno if it's related, that the microphone just works fine.

No way. I managed to find a proper enclosure.

To be sure, I installed the very 10.4.6 I had originally with the machine (I currently have Snow).

No iSight.

Got a "Bus USB", empty. A "Bus USB", with the IR device. A "Bus USB", with Bluetooth. A "Bus USB", with the top case, and a "Bus USB Hi-Speed", with the two external USB ports.

No iSight...

Stefano, since you've been around here for a while, I would suspect you have an external firewire hard drive. If so, install a system on it and boot from it and check your system profiler and see if the iSight shows up. You didn't tell us what these repairs were that you got charged for, please do.

No, sadly I've got just a USB disk, unsuited for this purpose. However I do have a Boot Camp Windows 7 partition. And in the Windows Device Manager, the iSight doesn't show up.

According to a preliminary call to a shop who once fixed my unit, the intervention seemed to range around $ 180, acquisition of a new iSight, working fee and what here passes for VAT included

Go through this guide to check the connection on the iSight cable to the logic board. I have not seen this camera go bad before.

I'd still like to see you get an external firewire enclosure and put your spare hard drive in it with a new system to see if this is a software problem. If not the part is cheap and the repair shop will probably use our guide to install it. Or you can order the part and DIY.

I guess from your reply that using the fast LCD replacement guide to check the iSight cable from the iSight side will be insufficient. Well, since I'm at it, I should give the machine the full service I guess.

I'd try to get a FW enclosure: the fact that Windows 7 can't see the iSight leaves me disheartened though.

Well, we at least can rule out a software issue. Go for that cable connection.
