Is something wrong with my charging port for my computer won't charge!

So my Gateway laptop is a fairly decent computer, yet it is made of a hard plastic outer shell which the same material is used to overlay the keyboard, so overtime the shell began to crack and lift off. Specifically it started on my charging port which I viewed as normal wear and tear, then it moved underneath my screen so I stopped using tablet mode to preserve it longer and patched it up with some duct tape. Suddenly one day as I was closing my laptop, the top panel cracked severely near the hinge making it impossible to open and close without further compromising the rest of the top panel. I need some files off this laptop, but it won't charge (being the charging port seems to have separated so it used to charge sporadically, now it doesn't at all) nor do I find it wise to open it. Can I save this laptop myself or so I have to take it to a repair shop to replace the shell and its components?

Hi @callmelyric

To recover your data you will have to get the laptop working.

This is due to the storage in the laptop being non user removable eMMC type storage.

Even if it were removed you would need specialized equipment to retrieve the data off the ICs

If you want to try yourself, open the laptop and check if the charge port simply needs resoldering onto the motherboard and if so, then once soldered, fully charge the battery, disconnect the charger and then recover your data. You may not even have to reassemble the laptop if you're careful.

Here's the ifixit Gateway GWTC116-2BL repair guide, that may help to gain access to the charge port.

A repair service should be able to do the same i.e. fix the charge port so that the data can be recovered and once that's done you can decide whether it is worthwhile fixing the laptop or not.

For what it's worth if you decide to replace the laptop try not to get a laptop that has eMMC storage as it is very difficult to recover your data if the laptop fails or even if the OS needs reinstalling. Get one that has removable storage i.e. sata or M.2 type SSDs. That way if the laptop fails for any reason and you don't have a recent backup stored externally, then you can remove the SSD and insert it into another PC and get your data back that way.
