hp HP x360 11-n010la laptop (quartz?) clock is off. How to fix?

Device started behaving extremely slowly for a period of time, then randomly recover for some seconds, to go back to being extrememly slow. Checked different OSs, to finally find out even the BIOS' self diagnostic tests are running slow, so the only thing i can think of is the CPU clock signal: it must be off.

Any help will be appreciated

Update: video of BIOS' ram check being extra slow:

It was the CMOS battery: it was removed and it worked fine. It was replaced and it works.

Thanks for your help.

Hi @cybercancun

The time is controlled by a capacitor/resistor/crystal oscillator circuit sending signals to the chipset on the motherboard.

Just to eliminate the possibility that it may be contributing to the problem check the voltage of the RTC battery on the motherboard to make sure that it is OK i.e. 3V DC. The RTC (Real Time Clock) battery is more commonly known as the cmos battery.

Here's the maintenance and service guide, taken from this support webpage for the laptop that may help.

Go to p.39 to view the procedure to remove the RTC coin cell battery so that it can be tested. If it is faulty the part number is at the top of the page. Search online for the part number to find suppliers that suit you best.

If the RTC battery is OK then if the motherboard's model number is LA-B181P (printed on the board) here's a link to the schematic that may help.

As can be seen on the image below taken from p.8 of the schematic, there's a 32.766KHz crystal oscillator used for the RTC function. Check if the C1009, C1010 and R994 components are all OK. The osc. board designation is Y8. If they're not designated, you may need a boardview file to locate them on the motherboard. Unfortunately I couldn't find one. Also my eyes are that good anymore so I can't make out the model number for the oscillator beyond its frequency but the specifications for the other components in the circuit are listed next to the component e.g. R994 = 10M_0402_5% i.e 10MOhm 5% tolerance in a 0402 smd package.
