Dropped phone in salt water pool - melted this bit, what is it?

My phone took a dip in a saltwater pool, started glitching, then got hot and powered off. Then it would not turn back on.

Came back from vacation and took it apart, disconnected most things, and finally got it to start up, enough that I could save my vacation photos.

The screen seems fine. I'd like to keep using it as a gaming phone, even if some of the accessories don't work. I do see a connector that appears blackened and melted. The ifixit teardown shows this connector on the motherboard, but the motherboard replacement guide is missing the connector. Does anyone know what it does?

@danp13762 that is your 5G mmWave antenna connector. I'd try and see if it can be resurrected. At least for the purposes you are thinking off.

For now, you must stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse. This may further damage your phone.

The very first step I would take is to disassemble your phone. Since iFixit does not yet have a guide for this phone, use these guides Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to help you disassemble your phone. Remove the main board and the charging board. I would replace the charging board and not try to clean it. It'll be better to replace it tehn trying to fix it. You will have to remove all the EMI shields from teh main board. If you do not remove the shields, you are not cleaning the board.

Take a close look at all components and connectors to assess the damage. Look for major corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. One thing, salt water is very corrosive, so use some sterile water first, to get rid of as much of the residue as possible. Once you got any gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for an Apple iPhone 3G but all the steps are still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning.

The importance here is the cleaning. It would of course be best to get it ultrasonically cleaned but if you do not have it available, this cleaning will at least give you a chance. Do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now.

After that, reassemble your phone (replace the battery) and re-evaluate. For as long as you have not cleaned your board and replaced the battery, everything is just a guess. Keep in mind that water damage is the hardest to troubleshoot and to repair. It does not matter if is was exposed for 2 seconds or 2 hours, what matters is where the water (particulates) did the damage.

I did disassemble my phone and inspected it for damage using a little macro camera that I have. I found two spots that looked burned out, the mmWave connector and what I think is a transistor near the main camera connector.

I tried cleaning both but it was no help. One of the tiny resistors fell off near the mmWave connector. If I connected the mmWave antenna, the phone fails to boot.

The phone does boot with the camera connected, but the camera app just shows blank screen, then eventually says the camera has failed.

Other than that, the microphone, speakers, screen, Bluetooth, wireless charging, fingerprint sensor, and wifi all work. Battery appears OK, and I can access phone storage.

I'm now the owner of a shiny new S24 Ultra, and my kids are excited over their new gaming screen. It's too bad about the camera failing, that was one of the best features. If I can get my hands on an S21 Ultra with broken screen for cheap I may do a motherboard transplant.

@danp13762 that is awesome. I am a strong believer in repurposing and if it works for the kids, it works for all of us. Hopefully you'll find what you are looking for, so you get it fixed all the way. BTW welcome to iFixit!

I'm sorry! BUT,

The salt water emersion with the power on and subsequent heat and melted part means something shorted and drew lots of current. The salt is just going to keep eating parts. That phone is ready for the dump. There is no fix.

Trust me, my sister did the same thing.

Oh I know something melted, it was this very connector.

I've done a lot more testing and found what this is. Based on the "G996U" label, and that with this disconnected I cannot get service, this is the mmWave antenna for US spec phones.

The rest of the phone seems to work. I'm hoping this can become a wifi only gaming device.

Hi @danp13762

Here's some info that may help.

It is for the G996B version but hopefully some of the faulty components may be the same for your model also.

SM G996B Service Manual, SM G996B PCB Layout, SM G996B Electrical Parts

Cheers
