My laptop is only showing 1 ram slot working of 8gb whereas I have 2 8gb rams installed which earlier showed 16 gb in total but one day when I was going through the laptop it started showing only 1 slot and stated that my laptop has only 8 gb ram

It could be faulty ram or a faulty ram slot.
What is the full model number of the laptop as seen on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?
Knowing the model number will help to find the manual so that you can read how to open the laptop and safely remove 1 ram module at a time and check if the laptop works or not and if it works with either one of the modules installed, to try the other slot to see if that works.

Go to p.31 to view the procedure to remove/replace the memory modules.
