Mid 2010 Modell A1278 / 2,4 oder 2,66 GHz Core 2 Duo Prozessor

Can I use the LCD from a mid 2010 on a mid 2012 MBP 13"

I have a 2010 13" A1278 which is completely useless and ready to be put to the sword, just about everything is broken except the LCD. so I am wondering if I can extract the LCD ONLY and use it on a 2012 model? I know the cables for everything are different (I have 2012 parts to replace them with) but I just want to be certain that the LCD's are 100% compatible before I get stuck in removing it.

Sellers list replacement LCD for A1278 as 2008-2012.

Out of curiosity are 2009 & 2010 fully compatible (Connecting cables wise)?

The raw panel connector color is the clue! A silver board colored connector won’t offer a good connection to a Gold color cable. That’s the same issue we face when dealing with the interoperability between the 2011 and 2012 systems. Using a 2011 display on a 2012 requires shaving the fiberglass tang a bit as the two connector vendors Apple used are not dimensionally the same (a tolerance difference). So the cable will fit into the logic board connector.

In the same light the reverse is too sloppy! As the pitch of the contacts are so narrow it’s possible the pins would short out.

As far at the LVDS connector interface it’s a de facto standard as such a raw screen which complies with the standard is physically able to mate. Here’s a good reference Interfaces in LCD Display modules – SPI, I2C, LVDS, MIPI, VX1, EDP and others

The only issue is if the systems firmware is able to read the ID string embedded in the display so the video driver is able to send the signal. The firmware video driver won’t work correctly but the OS driver will respond.

Give this a read! LM270WQ1 (SD)(A2)

@danj Do you understand my question correctly? I am simply asking if the LCD alone without any cables are the same from 2009-2012. I am fully aware about the cables being different at the logic board end, but on the LCD end they look very very similar. Calling upon @oldturkey03 to give me the answer I am looking for.

@livfe - Yes I did! 1 - The connector interface to the cable is an issue, 2 the ID string from the Display to the system is an issue. The LVDS standard in its self is not the issue. Nor is the physical screen. I can't give you a black and white answer.

@danj When I check online sellers for replacement LCDs some say 2009-12 are the same, some others list 2011/12. Upon inspection 09-12 look identical....

@livfe - The panel is the same it's the EDID string the display sends to the logic board to ID its self. I've pasted a display spec sheet so you can see what I'm talking about each generation of displays offer different ID's. Review the table on page 34.

@danj I think I just junk these crap units anyway, to much of a headache and a waste of time for near useless units.

Sellers list replacement LCD for A1278 as 2008-2012 (link in main question). @zpl 2nd opinion?
