Just started in Europe, worked fine before I left, was in carry-on, no damage to camera but it now won't stay on, it just cycles on and off. It doesn't show the normal screen, no battery level, etc, just some basic stuff for a second then goes black but the lens stays out for a few seconds, then quickly retracts and opens again on it's own. Help!

So, it turns out a bad SD card was causing the issues, what a strange thing to happen. A new card has restored the camera to proper operation, who knew such a simple thing could cause crazy issues like that!

@jim63472 excellent and glad you got it fixed. Good to know for future cases that something as benign as an SD card can cause this error. Repair is War on Entropy!

Hi Jim,
If it's not fixed by reinstalling the OS (if possible), it could be an issue between the power supply and the motherboard. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a single replacement motherboard for this thing. You could buy one being sold for parts and reuse the motherboard, hoping that it fixes the issue.

@jim63472 this "the lens stays out for a few seconds, then quickly retracts and opens again on it's own" is most commonly caused by a lens error. Start off by trying some of the steps suggested https://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/1...
If those don't work you may have to consider disassembling your camera/lens and to check it for any damage. Lens repair parts are not commonly available, so it may be easier to replace the lens. FYI the DSC-HX20 and HX30 share the same lens.

I just took the SD card out to see if it would reset the camera, and now the camera appears normal, with a message about the missing card. The lens has stopped popping in and out and the display is normal. Is this just a bad SD card causing this? I'll have to get another if that is the case. Easy fix?
I just put a new SD card in the camera, and it now works perfectly. Thanks for all your ideas, they led to me trying this out and I truly appreciate it. This is a great site, I'm so glad I found it!
