The Dell XPS 15 9560 is a light weight, high-performance laptop released in 2017 that features a thin-bezel 15.6-inch screen with 4k resolution and a 7th Generation Intel Core i3-7100H.

Does anyone know how to replace the AC jack on this laptop?

My laptop is reporting the message of "ac power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined" as such I have followed the troubleshooting steps and I have brought a new Charger and plugged it into the computer. However, the issue still persists.

So...How can I replace the AC Jack on this laptiop with little soldering knowledge?

Kind Regards,

Corgi.

Edit 25/9/24 - Thanks to the tireless work of shingle we have solved the issue. With a quick AC jack replacement and an installation my Laptop is now working!

just for ease of use I used this guide for disassembly : Dell XPS 15 9560 Fans Replacement

Though here are a few pitfalls I found!

- This should be what your hinge looks like Immediately after you open the laptop, you then need to undo three different screws, but first unplug the power connector, it has a bunch of red and black wires. Sorta like this:

Block Image

- see bottom left,

Then you untape the ( very fragile, so be careful) screen connector and the AC jack ( Actually called a DC connector for some reason).

Then you need to unscrew the two screws on top of the hinge, and VERY VERY gently push the hinge upwards.

There you will find a third screw, unscrew this one but Put it somewhere safe as it is actually different than the two other screws you have just removed

Once you have done that gently slot the new part into the hole into the little cut out for it and using the screw you have just put aside for safety, screw the new part into the cutout, you shouldn't really have to worry about orientation as it actually only fits in the correct configuration.

Now move the screen cable and the new power connector away from the hinge to close the hinge, it should look like the picture before you removed the screws, then gently replace the tape.

Then pick up the new connector for the AC jack ( It should look like the picture below) and plug it into the slot with the dot/divet facing upwards.

gently push in with very very minor wiggling if needed. and then put the screws for the hinges in once everything looks seated correctly.

Then re assemble the laptop as the guide but read backwards and cograts you should have a working laptop! Whoo hoo!

Great work, CorgiBruzah, glad to hear you got it figured out, and your efforts are sure to help someone else down the road.

Just to clarify, it's called a DC input jack because the power coming into that connector is DC, not AC. Your power supply takes in the 110V AC power from your house and converts it to the 19.5V DC that the computer runs on. That's what goes into the power port, not 110V AC; doing that would fry your whole computer.

@dadibrokeit Thank you Mr. Wheeler! I know very little about electricty outside the computer and this was very useful to understand it! Thank you!

Actually, you're in luck! The charge port on the 9560 isn't soldered on, but instead uses what appears to be a basic 7-pin connector, so you can just pull out the old one, and pop in the new one. If you'll open up your laptop, and take some pictures of the board and the charge port, I can give you step-by-step instructions on how to replace it. You'd probably want to buy a replacement such as this one.

Edit:

Alright, here's what to do. First, remove the two screws I circled in green, which will allow you to remove the retaining plate. Next, use your fingernail or a small flathead screwdriver to remove the connector circled in red. This might be enough to remove the old port module, although there could also be something else holding it down. If there isn't anything else holding it down, though, then you should be able to easily remove the old module and replace it with the new one.

Also, if you're able to send a picture of what each step looks like, then I'll be able to make a guide to help other people with the same issue!
