Panic full error, restarted unexpectedly

I've had my iPhone 16 Pro Max for three days, and while it was sitting idle, the phone restarted on its own. It only happened once, but when I checked the analytics reports, I found a full panic log. Should I be worried?

Update: I contacted apple support, they found after diagnosis a system defect, I did a full reset to my iPhone, and the diagnosis shows everything is working properly.

I did a diagnostic myself too, and everything is working great. But I don’t know what to do since I’ve never encountered such issue with my previous iPhones.

iPhone working normally, no weird behaviours

Generally we have the best luck figuring out panic logs given a bit more context; would it be possible for you to copy'n'paste or screenshot the whole first page of the panic log? The information you've posted doesn't look familiar to me so perhaps a little more data could help us get an idea of what's going on.

It is entirely possible for a software error to cause a kernel panic, so if that's what happened then the restore you did could well have fixed it permanently, although it's a bit unsettling not knowing what caused it in the first place. We do have a whole wiki page courtesy of the amazing @flannelist devoted to kernel panics, plus one on some specific kinds of errors on newer iPhones like yours. Here's a link to both of them for you to take a look at.

Alisha, have you seen anything like that AppleOLYHAL name?

Not specifically. I would have to dig through some schematics, but some of that stuff is getting sparse because we haven't gotten any leaked schematics since iPhone 12.

@flannelist I'm at a loss on the nomenclature here; I might suggest that the HAL part could stand for Hardware Abstraction Layer, but that still leaves the OLY part that I haven't even got a guess for.

Experiencing a sudden restart on your iPhone 16 Pro Max along with a panic log in the analytics is not necessarily a cause for immediate concern, but it could indicate an underlying issue. Panic logs typically occur when the system encounters a serious problem, such as a software crash or hardware issue, that forces the device to restart to protect itself. A single instance of this may be a temporary glitch or a one-off event.

However, if it happens frequently, it might point to a deeper issue—such as a problem with iOS, a specific app, or even hardware like the battery or internal components.

Please read through the iPhone Kernel Panics wiki page and use that to locate your panic logs. If you find one or more, copy and paste or screenshot the first page of the latest one and add it to your post.

Of course, if you don't find any panic logs, come back and let us know that, too.
