Is the behavior of the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter acting strange?

Help, please!

Devices that used to work when connected to the iPhone's 3.5mm jack or via a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter are no longer working with iPhone 16, iPad Pro, and iOS 18 when using a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter.

Do you know the specifications for the input signal for TRRS when using a USB-C adapter?

Additionally, what resistance value between MIC and GND would make the device recognize it as a headset with a microphone?

Did you try a replacement adapter? If you visit an Apple Store the tech there should have one to check your phone/adapter setup with theirs. Even if you are asked to buy it they should be willing to take it back if the issue is within your phone.

What is your headset is it a low impedance model?

Yes, I went to the Apple Store and spoke with a technician. They confirmed that the device works on iPhone 15, iPhone 12, and iOS 17, but does not work on the iPhone 16 Pro with iOS 18.

The technician stated that it is unusual for an Apple product to fail in this way—working with a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter but not functioning with a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter on the iPhone 16. They mentioned that this is likely a bug in iOS 18 and that there is nothing that can be done until Apple officially addresses the issue.

@takaokoichi - Ha! Apple messed up the newer iPhone or iOS 18. They did update the USB-C port to support the newer standards. Apples QC failed to test that I guess.

Please post an email to big Tim (tcook@Apple.com) let him know of this issue. This staff will pass it to QC to verify and then add it to the bug report. If anyone else encounters this please do the same, the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Please accept the answer, thanks!

When using a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter with devices like the iPhone 16 or iPad Pro running iOS 18, compatibility issues can arise due to differences in signal handling between the older 3.5mm audio jack and the newer USB-C port. For a headset with a microphone to be properly recognized, the adapter must correctly map the TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) pins. In a TRRS setup, the tip carries left audio, the first ring carries right audio, the second ring is for the microphone signal, and the sleeve is ground.

Older speaker and headphones have a three contact setup which is the root issue not the adapter as it complies with the current standards of four contacts so a microphone can be serviced as well.

I have yet to see either a USB-A or USB-C DAC adapter device not compliant to the current standards. I have seen people try using older headphones which don’t offer the needed plug trying to get them to work in the adapters jack.

Yes, of course, it is a 4-pole TRRS.

It was working with an iPhone 12 on iOS 17.

I suspect that there may be slight differences in the signal conversion specifications between the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter and the USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, or perhaps it’s due to a specification change in the iOS itself or a bug in the system.
