if you don't have any important data in thre you could just hard reset it by following this tutorial

That only works if a Google or Samsung account is not associated with the phone.
If there is and they don't remember the account user ID and password then they won't get past the FRP (factory reset protection) lock which has been enabled by the hard reset to re-enter and setup the phone after the hard reset.
At least with frp lock it can still be used by entering the email and password associated with the phone
That is if they remember it.
They've forgotten the pin so if there is an account linked to the phone chances are they've forgotten it as well.
Time will tell, if they respond
