Display not working after unplugging TB cable

Recently purchased used Thuderbolt Display. Connected it to my MacBook Pro 2023 and started up immediately. After unplugging it from the computer and trying to plug it back in, the screen stays black.

I don't have any troubleshooting tools but the USB port provides power to devices momentarily on plugging it into power then it does not.

Trying to get money back from seller but hopefully I can diagnose and correct beforehand.

Edit: power is being supplied from the charging cable to an old macbook. While this is charging the macbook, the usb appears to be getting intermittent power. I have an iphone pluuged into the USB and it will charge and uncharge by itself.

What happens if you shut everything down and then power the monitor and then restart the system? Who’s adapter are you using to convert the older TB 1/2 to the USB-C TB port the system has?

So I tried this after a simple restart of the MacBook. They both yield the same results. I’m using genuine apple adapter, TB 3 to TB2. Thank you for the reply.

@lich4711 - OK, let’s try this do you have a TB 1/2 cable? If you do plug one end into the displays ports, unplug the display cable from the adapter and plug this cable into it. Basically, we are bypassing the fixed cable for another, as TB is a point to point setup this works! The last possibility is the adapter failed for some reason or the display just died on you.

Ok I’ve ordered a TB2 cable. I see what you’re saying and didn’t know this was possible. Fingers crossed it’s this easy! I will report back thanks!

The TB2 cable direct from the rear of the display in the manual port, to the apple adapter works! Thank you for your help!

@lich4711 - If you don’t want to give up the port you can replace the dual cable. They are still available new as well as recycled.
