A common issue with the T42 affecting either the display or USB ports is flexing of the motherboard which can take out either component. See the following link:

I'm having an intermittent display problem due to this. It may be possible the only solution is re-balling the MB or replacing it. The above link gives all the details. Good Luck!!!

Do your USB ports show up in your system bios? Do they show up in the device manager under windows?
